Use a standard coffee maker
You don’t have to own an expensive coffee maker with a lot of functions. You only need simple one with a carafe, a filter and a grinder to make a perfect cup of coffee. Besides, you can use other type of coffee machines such as drip brewer or single serve brewer. However, they will take you longer time than a standard coffee maker.
Choose fresh ground coffee
Both grounded coffee or coffee beans can be used to brew coffee. However, you need to remember that coffee starts losing quality and flavor almost immediately after grinding. To make a perfect cup of coffee, it would be better if you chose to use fresh roasted coffee beans packaged in sturdy, vacuum – sealed bags.
Ground coffee is not a bad option, yet to enjoy the process of making a real coffee and to have the best-tasting brews, grinding beans within few minutes of brewing is a better choice.
Use the right proportion
For a standard coffee cup, you need 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee with 6 ounces of water. And most of coffee makers prefer using this proportion. You can adjust this proportion to taste though. If you like stronger coffee, just add more grounds. And lighter ones need less.
For people using mugs, you need more than 6 ounces. 8 ounces is a good amount for a mug of coffee and you’ll want to use 2 ½ to 3 level tablespoons of ground coffee. If it’s not suit your taste, adding a little more ground coffee is suggested. Beware that coffee may taste disappointing if you used too much water or too little ground coffee.
If you are brewing for your family with 4 people, simply multiply the amount of ground coffee you need by four. And so on.
Add good water
Coffee is 98% water so nothing can ruin a pot of coffee than bad water. If you don’t have good tap water, try using water filter jugs before you brew. Or, bottled water is always a good choice.
A lot of people re-boil the boiled water. But this can cause oxygen to escape and the water changes taste. Remember, only draw off fresh water from the tap, or water-filter with a proper amount that you need and boil just once.
Beware the temperature
Coffee tastes best when you use water that hasn’t reached the boiling point. Over – heated water will make the coffee bitter than pleasant.
And most coffeemakers regulate the temperature mode automatically. The proper brewing temperature is 200°F, or about 30 – 45 seconds off a full boil.
Once brewed, coffee doesn’t hold its best flavors for long. Reheating or extended holding in a warming machine will turn any coffee bitter and bad – tasting.
Watch for the length of time
With coffee machine, you don’t have control over the brewing time. But if you don’t use a coffee maker or a old model coffee maker, you have to watch out for it because only few seconds of extra – brewing can make coffee taste different from what you expected. There are many different suggestions for brewing time, but having coffee brewed about 3 and 5 minutes is most recommended.
